Video Slots — History

A man named Charles Fey developed the first commercially successful slot machine in his San Francisco machine shop around 1896. Made of cast iron with three internal reels, a slot for taking in coins and an external lever for activating the machine, it quickly became a staple of saloons, gambling houses and even many retail stores (where patrons would trade their winnings for goods from the store - hence the term "trade goods").

Today, no casino would be complete without gleaming rows of noisy, colorful, brightly lit slot machines. The mix of sounds from hundreds of machines chirping, spinning, stopping and clinking out coins is the iconic background music that fills every casino floor. They are by far the most popular casino game in the world, both in terms of number of games played and total wagers.

With the advent of digital electronics, slot machines have expanded from the original mechanical design to a wide range of computer-generated displays with multi-stage games and other new twists on an old favorite. First came multi-line slots with additional pay lines. Then video slots came on the scene to give game designers much more freedom to create interesting and innovative variations. Because they are computer-based, a number of video slots can be linked together to establish rapidly growing progressive jackpots.

With this continual evolution in excitement and entertainment value, the Slot Machine will remain as the most popular casino game for years to come.

Video Slots - Overview

Unlike traditional slot machines that depict a parallel set of rotating reels, Video Slot machines often display a grid of symbols arranged in rows and columns. During a spin, the symbols appear to rotate within each cell or column and then are randomly distributed throughout the cells when the spinning stops.

We speak of Video Slot machines as having, say, 5 "reels", even though you may not be able to see them. That's because these machines still use a fair spin of 5 unweighted, rotating reels to randomly distribute symbols among the cells. This means there is a distinct reel behind each column in the grid, and where it stops determines which symbols appear in the cells of that column.

Video Slots typically offer more pay lines than regular slots, and the lines may angle up and down through the cells as they move across the grid.

Because their interfaces are electronic rather than mechanical, Video Slots can also offer interesting side bets, bonus rounds and amazing graphics that provide much more fun and excitement.

To provide maximum enjoyment, each Video Slot machine is configured differently in terms of lines, payouts and betting options. Some have progressive jackpots, others offer more flexibility in terms of number of lines or control over how many credits are bet on each line. We provide the specific configuration for each machine in the Machine Details section.

Video Slots - Machine Details

To provide maximum enjoyment, each Video Slot machine is configured differently in terms of lines, payouts and betting options. Here we list the currently available models along with their specific machine configurations.

Video Slots - Bet Options

MAIN BET CONFIGURATIONS

Video Slot machines come in several different configurations with respect to betting options. The three main categories are Multi-Line, Multi-Coin and Combination. In addition, any style of machine may offer one or more optional multi-stage side bets. Click below for details on main bet configurations:

Video Slots - Main Bet Configurations: Multi-Line

MULTI-LINE

The number of coins bet per line is fixed, and the player can choose to bet a multiple number of lines on each spin, from one line up to the maximum number of lines available on the machine. With Multi-Line machines:

  • Typically, the number of coins per line is set to 1 Coin/Line.

  • Increasing the bet means turning on additional lines.

  • When the Max Bet is wagered, it means the maximum number of lines are enabled as pay lines.

  • The Bet Meter displays the number of coins wagered on a spin, which is equivalent to the number of lines enabled times the machine setting for the number of Coins/Line.

  • The more lines you bet, the greater your chances of getting winning combinations.

Video Slots - Main Bet Configurations: Multi-Coin

MULTI-COIN

Here the number of active pay lines is fixed (basically, all lines are enabled), and players can choose to wager a multiple number of coins per line on each spin, from one coin per line up to the maximum number of coins allowed per line. On Multi-Coin Machines:

  • The number of coins per line has a default setting of 1 Coin/Line, and is variable in 1-Coin increments.

  • Increasing the bet means incrementing the number of coins per line. On a 9-line machine, incrementing from Bet 1 to Bet 2 means changing the wager from 9 coins per spin to 18 coins per spin.

  • When the Max Bet is wagered, it means the wager will be set to the maximum number of coins allowed per line times the number of lines in the machine.

  • The Bet Meter displays the number of coins wagered on a spin, which is the number of lines on the machine times the player's setting for the number of Coins/Line.

  • The more coins you bet, the bigger your payout when you win.

Video Slots - Main Bet Configurations - Combination

COMBINATION

This is a combination of the Multi-Line and Multi-Coin machines, where players can choose to vary both the number of active lines and the number of coins bet per active line on ever spin. The controls and meters on a combination machine are more extensive to provide players with greater flexibility in configuring their bets. Side Bets. Some Video Slot Machines may offer players the opportunity to increase their winnings from a spin through an option to gamble it on a side bet. Click below for details on one such side bet:

Video Slots - Main Bet Configurations - Gleeble's House of Cards

GLEEBLE'S HOUSE OF CARDS

After the spin results are determined, players may opt to gamble the total amount showing in the Win Meter in one of two simple card games at true odds with no house advantage. Available on the Space Ace machine.

TO PLAY

Click the Gamble button on the game control panel when you have 1 or more coins showing in the Win Meter. The center of the screen will open to the House of Cards where you may choose to play either of these games:

  • Pick Color – House will draw one card from a single deck of 52 cards, and player picks whether the color will be Red (i.e. a Heart or a Diamond) or Black (i.e. a Spade or a Club). Click Red or Black to pick. The card is revealed and a correct pick pays 2 for 1 (double your money). The odds are 50-50, so there is no house edge.

  • Pick Suit – House will draw one card from a single deck of 52 cards, and player picks whether the suit will be Hearts, Diamonds, Spades or Clubs. Click a suit to pick. The card is revealed and a correct pick pays 4 for 1 (quadruple your money). The odds are 75-25, so there is no house edge.

Maximum Gamble – The maximum amount that can be gambled is 5000 coins, so if the Win Meter shows more than 5000, neither Gamble option is available.

Play 4 Times in Succession – Players may play the Gamble option up to 4 times in succession after a spin. Thus, if you win Gamble game, you may choose to gamble your total winnings again before your next spin. Each time you may choose either Color or Suit game. For example, you could pick a color, win, then pick a suit and win, then pick a color again. If you have a run of good luck and win all four successive Gambles, you could increase your original spin winnings by somewhere between 16x to 256x!

Note that once your winnings from a Gamble game exceed the 5000-coin limit on Gamble wagers, you will not be able to play any further successive gamble games this round. The gamble option will be disabled until after the next winning spin result. But don't feel bad, you've won over 5000 coins!

Progressive Jackpot Excluded – Finally, Progressive Jackpot wins are excluded from the Gamble option. This is true regardless of the jackpot amount. However, players who win the jackpot in a game may still use the Gamble option with any non-jackpot winnings from that game.

Disabled During Free Spins – During a series of Free Spins, the Gamble button is inoperative. Because the Free Spins cycle automatically, you cannot gamble the winnings from any one spin. However, when the Free Spin games have concluded, the Gamble button is reactivated and you may wager your total winnings from all Free Spins in a Gamble game (provided they do not exceed 5000 coins).

Video Slots - Progressive Jackpots

JACKPOT GROWTH

Some machines may have a Progressive Jackpot where part of the wagers from all players playing the same type of machine contribute to a central jackpot. As players around the world play the game, the jackpot progresses to higher and higher amounts. In some cases, the jackpot may be common to a number of different casinos so the payout amount increases at a faster rate. The jackpot keeps growing until somebody wins by getting the right combination of symbols on an active line.

JACKPOT PARAMETERS

Some machines may require placing Maximum Bets on all lines in order to qualify for the jackpot payout, some may require only the minimum bet on one line or something in between. Most jackpots have a minimum payout that is seeded by the House after a winning combination clears it out.

  • Space Ace – Minimum prize is $2000.00 and the maximum is unlimited. Minimum bet to qualify is one active line (one coin). Winning combination is 5 Supernovas on any one active line.

  • Faerie Tale – Minimum prize is $1000.00 plus 10% of the Jackpot per coin. The maximum prize is unlimited. Minimum bet to qualify is one active line (one coin). Winning combination is 5 Faerie Gold symbols on any one active line.

Jackpots Exclusions – Jackpot prizes are excluded from doubling or otherwise increasing by other special awards or bonuses in the game. Under no circumstances will the jackpot amount be increased or multiplied beyond what is in the pool created from player contributions or the House seed.

Jackpot Payouts – Jackpot winnings are not paid in coins to the machine but are paid directly to your account balance. You may continue to play the game and can use the jackpot winnings in this or other games.

Jackpot Cash-Outs – Jackpot prizes will be paid by cheque. For your security, in order to cash-out proceeds from a Progressive Jackpot you will be asked to verify your account and payment information.

Jackpot Promotions – You may be asked to participate in promotional campaigns and press announcements about the jackpot win and your payout. In order to receive your prize money, you must grant the Casino the right to use your name, location and photograph in these promotions, and otherwise agree to reasonable requests in support of these efforts.

Taxes and Reporting – You assume all responsibility for reporting personal income from wagering activities to local tax authorities, including jackpot payouts. You are solely responsible for paying any and all taxes, duties and fees resulting from your jackpot winnings.
